First-Time Pencils: Comfort and Joy in Every Use

  • In the 1970s, the easiest worksheet in the Kumon Centre was learning addition.
  • In 1979, worksheets designed for preschoolers to practice drawing lines were first produced.

However, it was observed that preschoolers who used pencils commonly available at the time would grip them tightly, struggling to control them properly and becoming tired quickly.

Thus, “Triangle Pencil 6B” was developed as a pencil suitable for preschoolers.
Subsequently, in response to customer requests, 4B and 2B pencils, as well as colored pencils, were released.

All of these products were developed to make learning enjoyable, specifically designed for the ease of use by preschoolers.

Three Types of Kumon Pencils

KUMON Triangle Pencil 6B (Ages 2-3-4)

This triangle pencil is ideal for a pencil debut for our toddlers aged two and up. This pencil is triangular in shape, with sides measuring 1 cm wide and is shorter than most pencils, making it easy for our children’s small and weak hands to grip. The Triangle Pencil 6B has a softer lead than the 4B and 2B pencils, allowing our children to make strokes with ease. The strokes produced are darker and thicker than those made with the 4B and 2B pencils. Our children will become more confident in writing when they see the strokes they have made with the pencil. Using the Triangle Pencil 6B will help our children learn to hold a pencil correctly, while also providing a comfortable and easy start to writing and drawing practice

KUMON Triangle Pencil 4B (Ages 3-4-5)

If our child is already accustomed to using pencils, then the Kumon Triangle Pencil 4B is the correct type of pencil for our 3-year-old. This pencil is triangular in shape with a side width of 1 cm and a medium length (slightly shorter than most pencils), making it easy for our child’s still-developing hands to grip. The Triangle Pencil 4B has a softer lead than a 2B pencil, allowing our child to easily make strokes that are thicker and darker than those made with a 2B pencil. Our child will become more confident in writing when they see the strokes they produce. The Triangle Pencil 4B is ideal for children who are just starting to learn to write numbers and letters.

KUMON Triangle Pencil 2B (Ages 4-5-6)

For our children who are about to enter elementary school or are already in elementary school, the Kumon Triangle Pencil 2B is the most suitable type of pencil to accompany their writing journey. This pencil is triangular in shape, with a side width of 1 cm and a standard length, making it easy for our children to grip. The Triangle Pencil 2B has a harder lead than 4B and 6B pencils, resulting in brighter strokes compared to those made by 4B and 6B pencils. The Triangle Pencil 6B is also ideal for adults who require additional support in handwriting due to prolonged computer use, which can affect their hand dexterity.

Testimony

I use a computer for at least eight hours every day. Without realising it, I found that typing on a computer keyboard for long periods of time made it difficult for me to write with a pen. My hand would ache when holding a pen and feel stiff, so I could only write short sentences. This was quite a problem because I need to write things down to remember what I’ve read and learnt. Then, a friend introduced me to Kumon Triangle Pencils. When I tried them, they felt very comfortable to hold because they are larger than standard pens and pencils. Their triangular shape also makes it easier for me to write. Finally, I’ve been able to write again and have become diligent about journaling after using the Kumon Triangle Pencil 2B.
